"The worn hands of an elder tell the story of a life well lived. That is what comes to mind when I see these hands which belong to my grandmother. To say she has lived an interesting life is an understatement. Dancer on Broadway and television; swimming and diving instructor; lifeguard; ski and yoga instructor; adopted by three Native American tribes; anointed medicine woman and ordained minister; provider of pastoral care for terminally ill children and their families; practitioner of Native American bodywork until age 83; nature guide; avid kayaker... The list goes on and on.
After years apart, I was fortunate to spend some time with her last Christmas in her small apartment in Atlanta, Georgia. We sat and talked about life, old times, and photography. My grandmother has always supported my creative endeavors, whether they be music, literary, or art related. For years, she kept every piece of artwork or writing I shared with her. When she turned 80, I began making her an annual calendar of my photo adventures. Fast forward nearly fifteen years, and that tradition is still going strong.
During this particular visit with my grandmother, it dawned on me that I had no current pictures of her, and certainly none I had taken. While we talked, she let me capture a few candid shots. I focused on her hands. Hands express so much about a person, as much as any facial expressions can. They convey a history of a lifetime.
Sadly, this would be the first and last photo I took of her. She passed away peacefully this past summer at the age of 94. A life well lived, and a photo I will now treasure forever..."

"I'm a college student majoring in photography, and as finals are approaching I had one last project to do for my digital photography class. I chose to research contemporary photography and looked at artists like Rut Blees Luxemburg for inspiration. I was really captivated by her night time photography. It was incredibly foggy outside in Fairfield, Connecticut and so I set up my tripod and took long exposures of the traffic lights changing colors. The fog expanded the lights glare and created a really cool effect."

"I took this photo in Scotland on a trip for my 30th birthday this October. I loved the way the lone sheep looked standing in the grassy hills and the details of its horns."

"I took this picture at the black sand beach on the coast of Vik in Iceland. I saw the couple on the right hand side of the frame begin holding hands as I composed the photo. I think without them it would be rather lifeless but with them it tells a story."

"This picture was taken on Dublin Lake in New Hampshire. The fall colors were just starting to come in and smoke from the Canadian wildfires created diffused lighting. I went out to the lake to get a few shots as the sun was setting and took this one almost as an afterthought. It wasn't until I got home that I realized how well the composition worked with the background and lighting. To me, this picture showcases the end of summer and the start of fall."

"Every year, on my grandfather's birthday, I take a portrait of him as well as capture photos of the rest of the party, as a way to commemorate the generations that came together to celebrate the man who brought our enormous family together.
This year was his 90th birthday, a very important milestone for all of us."
