October 12, 2010 - An after-school job led Jim Wilson to his passion and profession. Wilson was a high school sophomore when he took a job at a local camera shop.
"It developed into my lifelong work," said Wilson, who opened Milford Photo in August 1995. "It's a great field. It touches everybody. We're in the business of capturing memories."
Since opening 15 years ago, Milford Photo has become a leading provider of photographic products and services in the state. The company has the typical inventory of digital and film cameras and related supplies and equipment. There are also several specialty services, which are too numerous to list, as well as classes and workshops.
Its newest offering is a Photo Walk Series, which has photography experts leading enthusiasts on field trips through local natural settings. On Sunday, the series will take people paddling on Lake Wintergreen in West Rock Ridge State Park in Hamden for a unique angle from which to shoot autumn foliage.
"I have a full-time custom framer and full-time videographer, who takes old movies and videotapes and transfers them onto DVDs," Wilson said. He also employs a full-time digital imaging specialist, who restores old photographs and designs ads. Wilson's staff includes 15 full-time and five part-time employees.
The shop grew so quickly that five years after opening, Wilson relocated his business to its current location at 22 River St., in Milford.
"We just upgraded all our imaging equipment last month. We're in a fast-changing business. We have to stay up to date with technology," he said.
Customers can leave the printing of images to the experts there or do it themselves. Milford Photo has a digital print room, where customers can view, crop, edit and print their photos, create posters, calendars and photo books.
"I don't know too many businesses that can have people laughing and crying at the counter (when looking at their photos)," Wilson said.
